Osceola a go!

The hiking club (or at least the few who were able to attend) braved the weather for what ended up being an amazing hike up the summit of Mount Osceola. The forecast was sunny, temperatures ending up in the mid 40's and wind gusts up to 60 mph.
USGS Surveying Seal: Osceola Peak 4315 ft

The day started with temperatures in the 30's and warmed up gradually. There had been snow the night before so Osceola was covered! The snow melted as we ascended the mountain creating fog and simulated rain drops all while the sun was shining. It was an odd experience however we were thankful for our rain shells.

The summit was beautiful and the sun managed to stay out long enough for the club to enjoy the view. Mr. Boyle and the students even for the opportunity to help the local squirrel population be providing them a few accidental m&m's. Soon the sun went in and the wind started to blow so the club made it back for the van. Total trip time was about 5 and a half hours: 2hr 30min for the ascent and 2hr 15 min for the descent.

All said and done the hike went off very well. No broken gear, no broken hikers, and the satisfaction of summiting a quite beautiful mountain. Also the SJP Hiking Club enters the 4k footer game!

Osceola Hike - Sunday October 17th.

Hikers,

The club is hiking Mount Osceola on Sunday, October 17th. We're leaving school at 7:00 am. from the junior lot and heading North!

We'll be accessing Mount Osceola from Tripoli Rd, right off I-93. We will be hiking to the summit of Osceola only and not including the additional hike to East.

Osceola is a 4300 ft mountain, with an ascent of about 2500 feet from the trailhead off Tripoli Rd. The weather is slated to be quite nice on Sunday, but students should still be sure to bring a wind-breaker as it will be cooler and more windy at the summit. Hikers should layer so that they are warm. Synthetic base layer and some fleece are great to have. No cotton!

Additional gear should include a few bottles of water, a few granola bars, and perhaps a winter hat and gloves in case we spend any time on the summit. As always, stiff soled shoes are good to have.

For some additional information on Osceola check out Hike New England's Osceola Entry.

If you haven't already done so remember to bring a permission slip with you!

Welcome Back!

Hikers! Welcome back to school and the hiking club!

This year we're trying to get to the White Mountains a few times before Fall turns to Winter. In the winter we may want to try to do some snow shoeing locally, perhaps the club's home-away-from-home: Dogtown Commons?

This summer was filled with lots of great opportunities to get outdoors! I certainly hope that you took advantage of them. Mr. Soule managed to get out in the Rangeley area of Maine for some great hiking! Here is a photo of him near a rock: good stuff!

If you have any photos from summer excursions be sure to let Mr. Soule know so that we can post them up for the club!
